Water Sensor Diya

Water Sensor Diya: A Light That Wakes Up with Water |

Experiment 12 · Electronics & Solar Starter Kit🪔

A glowing diya that lights up when it feels water, with a transistor as its brain.

🎯 What are we building?

We combine two earlier ideas: water conducting a tiny current, and a BC547 transistor that boosts it. When water touches two probes the LED diya lights up.

Wire it just like this on your breadboard. The coin cell pushes, the resistor protects, the LED glows.

⚙️ How does it work?

Water between the two probes lets a tiny current reach the transistor. The transistor acts like a helper and lets a stronger current flow to the LED, which glows. Remove the water and the light goes off.

🌍 Where is this used in real life?

  • Water tank alarms tell us when the tank is full so water is not wasted.
  • Flood sensors in basements warn people early when water enters.
  • Washing machines and dishwashers sense water levels the same way.

💡 What could YOU invent with it?

Make a “plant thirst alarm”: a light that glows when the soil in a flower pot is wet enough, and stays dark when the plant needs water. It could help busy families and school gardens keep plants alive.

🧪 Try this!

Where in your home could a water sensor save water or prevent a leak? List three places.
