LED Polarity

LED Polarity: Why Does an LED Only Work One Way?

Experiment 02 · Electronics & Solar Starter Kit🔁

Meet the LED’s secret rule: it only lets electricity pass in one direction.

🎯 What are we building?

We build the LED circuit, then turn the LED around and see what changes. You will discover that an LED has a positive leg (the longer one) and a negative leg.

Wire it just like this on your breadboard. The coin cell pushes, the resistor protects, the LED glows.

⚙️ How does it work?

An LED is like a one-way street for electricity. When the current enters from the positive leg it flows and the LED glows. When it is reversed, the street is blocked, so there is no light and nothing gets harmed.

🌍 Where is this used in real life?

  • Phone chargers use one-way parts so power never flows backwards.
  • Solar garden lights stop the battery from leaking power back into the panel at night.
  • Every battery-operated toy has a plus and a minus marking so we connect it correctly.

💡 What could YOU invent with it?

Make a “Right-Way Tester” for your class: a tiny gadget with an LED that lights up only when a battery is placed correctly. It helps younger kids and even elders put batteries in torches and remotes without confusion.

🧪 Try this!

Look closely at an LED: which leg is longer? Which side of the plastic bulb is flat? Write down what you find.
