BC547 Transistor as a Switch

BC547 Transistor as a Switch: A Tiny Switch with No Fingers | BC547

Experiment 10 · Electronics & Solar Starter Kit🔀

Meet the transistor: a tiny switch that a small signal can turn on.

🎯 What are we building?

We use a BC547 transistor to switch an LED on and off. Instead of pressing a button with a finger, a very small electric signal does the pressing for us.

Wire it just like this on your breadboard. The coin cell pushes, the resistor protects, the LED glows.

⚙️ How does it work?

The transistor has three legs. A tiny current into the middle leg opens the gate, and then a bigger current can flow through the other two legs and light the LED. Think of it like a tap: a gentle touch on the handle lets a lot of water flow.

🌍 Where is this used in real life?

  • Every phone, computer and TV contains billions of tiny transistors working as switches.
  • Automatic street lights switch on when it gets dark using a transistor.
  • Doorbells, remotes and toys use transistors to control bigger parts with small signals.

💡 What could YOU invent with it?

Invent a “touch-to-light” lamp: when you touch two metal points, the lamp turns on with no heavy switch. It could help people with weak fingers or elders who find pressing switches difficult.

🧪 Try this!

Look at the flat side of the BC547. Which leg is the left, middle and right one? Draw it and label it Collector, Base and Emitter.
